THE HAIR
By Eugene Souleiman

The Look

Soft, pulled-apart fishtail braids — one in the front and another in the back.

Inspirations

“I felt like the girl had been traveling, she’s in the environment and these braids have fallen a little apart, so there’s this romance and organic quality to them. I wanted it to feel very loose and textured, almost like wheat. I wanted to see the little imperfections — there’s a sensuality to it.”

Get the look

“Take a piece of hair, split it into two and then take a third piece of hair from the outside and put it into the inside. From the left, from the right, from the left, from the right — and you just follow that pattern. It takes about 10 minutes to do one so you need strong fingers.”

Braids…work-friendly?

“It is! You can wrap the braid around the head, you can put it in knots, wrap it into a bun, you can do lots of things to it. You could just have a single braid down the back. That’s the great thing about this kind of hairstyle — it’s versatile. There’s a sophistication to it; it’s not a naïve, girly, Pippi Longstocking braid.”

End note

“This is something that’s very wearable, and yet at the same time it’s a statement — a very pretty statement.”
