Match made in heaven: Betsey Johnson, right, with her most adorable mini-me Lulu, 1980. Photo by Harry Benson.
Throughout her entire colorful career, designer Betsey Johnson has remained wholly, truly and unapologetically herself, an arbiter of cartwheel-worthy cheer. And she has passed that independent, joie de vivre trait to her daughter, Lulu.

Betsey recently wrote her first book, Betsey: A Memoir, in which Lulu plays a big part. The pair live within minutes of each other in California, making fun family time a priority for Betsey, Lulu, Lulu’s two daughters and Betsey’s beloved dog, Johnny Cash. For Tory Daily’s 10th Annual Mother’s Day issue, Betsey and Lulu have shared some of their favorite memories and invaluable motherly advice with us.

Betsey:

My relationship with my daughter is…

Wonderfully loving and strange. We’re too close for comfort but live and die for each other!

Our Mother’s Day tradition has always been…

Going out to breakfast, brunch or dinner.

My most memorable adventure with my daughter…

When she stet me go on a humongous roller coaster in Vegas!

The best advice Lulu ever gave me was…

“Listen to ME mom… I’m RIGHT!” (She usually is).

I try to be the kind of mother who…

Does ME while she does HER. Empathizes… something she’s teaching me how to do!

I often end up being the kind of mother who…

Gives in very easily. Cares TOO much. Says yes to almost everything… age changes, love doesn’t!

My daughter influenced my personal style by…

Being my opposite — like beige and rainbow. Lulus is always honest and tells me her opinion about me… always trying to help even when I was just “doing my own thing.”

I embrace ambition by….

Working my ass off and loving it.

Lulu inspires me to embrace ambition by…

Just loving me.

Lulu:

My relationship with my mother is…

Close, loving and warm. No BS, very honest.

Our Mother’s Day tradition has always been…

To have a brunch/lunch with each other which now includes my two daughters, as well.

My most memorable adventure with my mother…

There are so many! My 25th birthday in Vegas taking her on a rollercoaster!

The best advice my mother ever gave me was…

“Always say I love you to the people you love,” “You have a choice in how you feel” and “Choose to be happy.”

I try to be the kind of daughter who…

Is supportive, respectful, loving, helpful, and very honest.

I often end up being the kind of daughter who…

Is too honest.

My mother influenced my personal style by…

Wear what you love! Not giving a sh*t about what everyone else thinks.

I embrace ambition by….

Preparing, more cautiously than my mother.

My mother inspires me to embrace ambition by

Risk everything — just do it!
